WESTPORT, Conn. It may have been an ordinary November day elsewhere, but it was Oct. 31 all over again at Westport Police Headquarters Saturday during a special post-Halloween party hosted by the town's emergency services.
With goody bags in hand, hundreds of young costumed visitors like 4-year-old Kate Rodriguez went trick-or-treating around the complex, receiving candy from police officers, firefighters, Emergency Medical Service personnel and members of the Westport Police Athletic League.
"I think it's great," said Kate's mom, Lauralyn, of Westport. "It's a really nice effort."
The two-hour affair was intended to make up for the fact that town officials urged parents not to take their children trick-or-treating Monday night due to downed trees, wires and power outages that remained following the Oct. 29 nor'easter.
And the kids were treated to more than just candy they also got to explore an ambulance, fire truck, police cruiser and police motorcycles.
"I really like it. It's a cute event," said Elizabeth Thibault as her 15-month-old son Guthrie sat inside one of the fire trucks. "At his age, he doesn't eat candy, so it's nice that there are all these different things for him to see. And it's a non-threatening environment."
Police Chief Dale Call said the day was a hit, estimating between 500 and 600 children showed up during the first hour. "This may become an annual event," he said.
