Norwalk's Sonics Win a Pair to Stay Unbeaten

NORWALK, Conn. -- The Norwalk Junior Soccer Association's Sonics under-13 girls won two games this past weekend. The Sonics remain undefeated at the top of their division with two more games to play.

On Saturday, the Sonics won against Wilton, 7-1. The Sonics dominated from the start with forward Melissa Guzman quickly scoring. She scored two more goals later  in the first half.

In the second half, midfielders Nazae Craw, Lindsay McEwan, Evelyn Morris and Caroline Abrams played a great passing game. Samantha Ruess, playing upfront  and out of her usual defensive position, was able to  score, quickly followed by two from Christy Russo.

Guzman, not content with the hat trick, added another goal, setting a new team record of four goals in a game. Wilton did catch the Norwalk defense out of position and scored their only goal on a breakaway.

Sunday's game against Westport was more evenly matched. The Sonics again looked strong from the start, mounting several well-timed attacks with good spells of possession. Unfortunately their hard work went unrewarded in the first half. In process of making a great save, Sonics keeper Amanda Barke, took a very hard shot to the head at close range. Danielle Bonis stepped in to take to take the injured keeper's place

In the second half, the Sonics battled to maintain possession and continued to mount attacks that all seemed to be answered by the Westport defense. Finally, Craw put a corner kick in the box and  Amanda Barker shot it past the goalie for the only goal of the game.

Westport mounted a strong attack in the last 10 minutes. Key saves by Bonis and a strong defense from Olivia Lipson, Kathleen McElaney, Anne Caldwell and Leah Zezima allowed Norwalk to hang on for the win.
