OSSINING, N.Y. -- While many other farmers markets have either lost vendors or shut down, the Ossining Farmers Market is becoming stronger just in time for its 22nd spring season.

The year-round farmers market opens its spring/summer season at 8:30 a.m. Saturday at the corner of Spring and Main in Ossining. As part of the celebration for Westchester's longest running farmers market, this Saturday will bring in several new vendors and includes a live performance at 10 a.m. from Westchester's own Shovel Ready String Band.

"It's great news for local farms that this is continuing to grow," said Nicole Reed, of Down To Earth Farmers Markets, the group that coordinates dozens of farmers markets around Westchester County. "It all started in 1991 and this is really the core of the local food movement for the Hudson Valley."

Down To Earth Farmers Markets recently announced its 2013 campaign: For The Love of Taste. Throughout the season, residents are invited under the Market Manager’s tent for a creative take on the highlighted taste of the month, according to a press release.

"People shop at the farmers market for environmental reasons, political reasons and corporate reasons. But at the end of the day, one common reason people love it is because it tastes better," Reed said. "So every month we're going to have a tasting at the market that features seasonal produce so shoppers can experience all that the Hudson Valley offers."
