Eastchester: Little Damage, No Injuries

EASTCHESTER, N.Y. --  Town of Eastchester Supervisor Anthony Colavita was at the town command center Sunday morning, with his sleeves rolled up, ready to deal with the after effects of Tropical Storm Irene.

“Considering the amount of damage we were anticipating, and the small amount we got, I feel we are very, very fortunate,” Colavita said.

Colavita said DPW workers were out in full force checking the town for any problems.

“We had no injuries, and some flooding and a small amount of power outages,” he said. “We have a few downed trees.”

One such tree was actually a telephone pole, situated on Wilmot Road in front of the Keilor residence.

David and Stacy Keilor awoke this morning with electricity and no damage to their house. A Con Edison pole had fallen during the storm, but got caught on some wires. The pole was literally hanging over the Keilor’s driveway.

“I called the town at 8 a.m.,” said Stacy. “They already knew about it and said they had advised Con Edison, but we also called them ourselves.”

Three hours later and the pole was still looming over the Keilor’s property.

“The thing that upsets me is that this pole was struck in a car accident a while ago and Con Edison installed a new pole right next to it,” said David. “They just never got around to moving the transformer and the other wires over to the new pole and taking out the one they already knew was not stable."

Still the Keilors counted themselves lucky. “We are all okay and I am sure they will get to this today,” David said of the dangling pole.

A large tree also fell on Leewood Drive, just before the entrance to the Bronx River Parkway, which was closed.

Eastchester has a safe center set up at Lake Isle for anyone who needs to leave their home, something Colavita said will remain in effect for the next day or two.

“Flood waters could continue to rise, or people that don’t have power may need to stay at the center, so we are leaving it open,”  Colavita said. “We are all feeling very blessed at how well the town did throughout the storm.”
