Runners Take, Make Their Mark in Fairfield

There's a big weekend of running coming up in Fairfield. The Fairfield Road Races, including a 5K on Saturday and a half-marathon on Sunday, will take off from Jennings Beach in one of the Fairfield County running community’s most celebrated events.

The half-marathon, in its 31st year, has sold out with 4,500 runners registered to begin their race at 8:30 a.m. The 5K is limited to 1,500 runners. There are still spots open for that race, which also starts at 8:30.

The men's race is expected to be contested between three recent race winners–Ethiopia's Bado Worku (2010), Kenya's Benson Cheruiyot (2007) and Ethiopia's Worku Beyi (2009). Ethiopia's Ketema Nigusse (second in '09, third in '10) is also expected to challenge for the top spot. Ridgefield's Lucas Meyer, Connecticut's top distance runner, has entered the race for the first time and should be the top U.S. finisher. Westport's Tom Harding, a past winner of the race, is expected to be one of the top local finishers. Turkey's Tertza Dengersa and Morocco's Malika Mejdoub head the women's field. "This year's race should be very exciting,'' race coordinator John Bysiewicz said. "Both the men's and women's races could be decided in the last few steps."

Proceeds from the race benefit several local charities. Past recipients include the Fairfield YMCA, the Bridgeport Hospital Burn Unit and several groups affiliated with the Fairfield Firefighters. The race is sponsored by the Stratton Faxon law firm. Complete information is available on the race website.
