Stamford Hospital is the only hospital in the state and one of only four hospitals in New England to receive the honor this year.

Established in 2004, the Outstanding Achievement Award focuses on enhancing quality cancer care, with the goal of increasing awareness about care choices among cancer patients and their loved ones.

The award is designed to recognize those cancer programs that achieve excellence in providing quality care to cancer patients; motivate other cancer programs to work toward improving their level of care; facilitate dialogue between award recipients and health care professionals at other cancer facilities for the purpose of sharing best practices; and encourage honorees to serve as quality-care resources to other cancer programs.

The OAA is granted to a facility following an onsite evaluation by a physician surveyor during which the facility demonstrates a commendation level with seven standards that represent the four areas of program management, clinical services, patient outcomes and data quality. In addition, facilities must receive a compliance rating for each of the remaining 27 cancer program standards.

For patients and the community, the quality standards established by the CoC ensure a comprehensive approach to care and information about clinical trials and new treatment options. Stamford Hospital’s Bennett Cancer Center’s multidisciplinary team of board-certified physicians, radiation therapists, oncology nurses and nurse navigators offers the highest clinical standard of care. The team provides prevention and early detection programs, cancer education and a cancer registry that offers lifelong patient follow-up, ongoing monitoring and improvements in quality cancer care.

Patients and their family can benefit from personalized and family-centered support options including integrative medicine programs, individual and family counseling, health, prevention and survivorship programs and palliative and hospice care.
