Rye's Nabhan Powers Colgate Field Hockey to Win

HAMILTON, N.Y. -- Olivia Nabhan was not aware of what she accomplished in the Colgate field hockey season-opening 3-0 win over Ball State until after game. The 2010 Rye graduate scored two goals and assisted on the third, becoming the second Colgate field hockey player to score twice in the opening game for the second consecutive year.

This was Nabhan’s first two-goal game of her young career.

“I feel proud to be recognized in the same category as my classmate and close friend, Halle Biggea, because she is such a great player,” said Nabhan, who scored the winning goal in double overtime of the 2007 New York State Class B championship game against Garden City. “I hope that the two of us can be successful together and help our team compete in the Patriot League Tournament.”

Freshman Amanda DiDomizio, a 2011 Lakeland graduate, made 11 saves to register the shutout in her inaugural start. Nabhan, who starts at forward, converted a rebound of a Lauren Dittman shot in the first half. She doubled the lead to 2-0 at 11:09 of the second half, finishing off a two-on-one created by Biggea. Nabhan returned the favor, picking up a rebound and feeding Biggea for the third goal.

“On the first goal, we drew a penalty corner and my teammate, Lauren Dittman, rocketed a shot that the Ball State goalie made a great save on,” Nabhan said. “Lauren’s shot is extremely powerful and most goalies have trouble controlling them. I happened to be in a good position on the right post for the rebound.”

Nabhan credited Biggea for the second goal.

“Halle made a great defensive tackle, resulting in a two-on-one breakaway,” said Nabhan, who also fed Torie Stearns for the winning goal in the 2008 Empire State Games scholastic women’s field-hockey goal-medal game, giving Hudson Valley a third straight gold. “Halle drew the defender in and at the last second dished the ball off to me on the left side. The Ball State goalie dove, in hopes of saving the goal, however, I opted to lift the ball.”
