The term "french fried potatoes" was first seen in print in 1856 in " Cookery for Maids of All Work" by E. Warren, according to nationaldaycalendar.com.

Others believe the term was introduced into the lexicon around World War I when American soldiers first tasted Belgium fries. The Belgian army at the time, spoke French, nationaldaycalendar.com said.

It isn't clear when July 13 first became the unofficial day to celebrate the french fry, but feel free to stop by your favorite local eatery, and enjoy your fries any way you prefer.

And, since they tend to be best with burgers, go here to vote on our DVlicious contest for "Best Burger in Westchester."
