The first Lt. Governor of New Jersey came to speak with a diverse group of students who are seeking to secure rewarding professional careers in a variety of fields.
She then toured new facilities in Woodland Park, including the Berkeley College School of Health Studies.
“We are honored to have Lt. Governor Kim Guadagno visiting our campus,” said Michael J. Smith, President of Berkeley College. “Lt. Governor Guadagno is focused on employment growth and building New Jersey’s economy, and here at Berkeley College, we are doing our part by educating and positioning our workforce now and for the future.”
Guadagno acknowledged two of her top priorities are job growth and keeping businesses in New Jersey.
“If there was anyone who could appreciate keeping a job and staying in one place, it was someone like me, who grew up watching my dad always getting a new job,” she said, recalling how her family often moved when her father was in search of new employment. “It is not just a job – it is a whole community and a family. It was and still is personal to me.”
Berkeley College student Kameron Bousquet of Totowa, asked about what New Jersey is doing to encourage companies to come and grow in New Jersey.
“Making the numbers work and making them feel welcome,” Guadagno said. She cited several instances where companies chose locations in New Jersey, such as Jersey City and Camden, rather than in New York or Pennsylvania, by using longer term tax-break incentives and making them feel at home.
Guadagno also emphasized the important role education plays in economic opportunity. “It all comes back to a good college education,” she said. “A good education gives you the freedom to take a risk – to try for something.”
Noting that New Jersey has the most educated workforce in the country, she said that going forward in New Jersey, the growth will be in financial services, healthcare, logistics, and STEM fields (science, technology, engineering and mathematics).
A leader in providing career-focused education since 1931, Berkeley College is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education and enrolls more than 8,000 students – including more than 600 international students – in its Master, Baccalaureate, and Associate degree and Certificate programs.
Berkeley College has five New Jersey campuses – Dover, Newark, Paramus, Woodbridge and Woodland Park. In New York there are three campuses – Midtown Manhattan, Brooklyn and White Plains.
