Stamford's Dan Madwed Among Sports Night Honorees

STAMFORD, Conn. – Stamford native and former Westhill High student Dan Madwed will be among the honorees Monday at the eighth annual Fairfield County Sports Night Hall of Fame dinner at the Hyatt Regency Greenwich after being named the 2012 Big Ten Men’s Swimmer of the Year as a senior at the University of Michigan.

Madwed won four Big Ten Championships and earned five All-America honors this winter. The senior co-captain placed fourth in the 100-yard butterfly and fifth in the 200-yard butterfly at the 2012 NCAA Championships. He concluded his career with 14 All-America honors along with being part of 14 Big Ten championships in either individual or relay events.

He also competed in the U.S. Olympic Swimming Trials for the third time in this summer. His first one was when he was just 15. He also swam in the 2008 Olympic Trials. This year, the 23-year-old advanced to the finals of the 200-meter butterfly and placed seventh with a time of 1:58.36. He also placed 16th in the 100-meter butterfly.

In his freshman year at Westhill High, Madwed made an impact on the program and excelled for the Vikings for three years. He still holds the state high school record with a time of 49.75 in the 100-yard butterfly at the 2005 State Open Championships.

Madwed attended his senior year of high school in Towson, Md., which gave him the opportunity to train at the North Baltimore Aquatic Club, where Michael Phelps is a member.

That helped Madwed earn his scholarship to Michigan, where he also excelled in theclassroom. He was named to the Academic All Big-Ten team this year and is a four-time University of Michigan Academic Achievement award winner.

Tickets are still available for the dinner, which begins at 6 p.m. For information contact Tom Chiappetta at 203-984-4806 or tomchip21@aol.com.
