North Salem High Seniors Reflect on Mock Legislative Session

NORTH SALEM, N.Y. -- The North Salem Daily Voice accepts signed, original letters to the editor. Letters may be emailed to letters@dailyvoice.com.

North Salem High School seniors Paige Banfield and Linda DosSantos, among the winners of state Sen. Greg Ball's (R-Patterson) Outstanding Youth Award, joined the state senator in Albany on May 29 for a Mock Legislative Session.

To the editor:

It was an honor to be selected by Sen. Greg Ball to attend his Mock Legislative Session for students from schools throughout the Hudson Valley. Participating in this event has provided us with insight as to the work and dedication that is involved in creating, debating, and passing legislation. As part of the experience we, as student representatives, were responsible for introducing, debating, and voting on five pieces of legislation including an act on hydraulic fracturing, raising minimum wage, amending the public health law in relation to UV radiation, microstamping of ammunition, and protection of employees against employer access to social media accounts.

The opportunity was wonderful and the experience was educational. It was a privilege to be involved in a “hands on” manner - being in the Senate chamber and seated at a senator’s desk. We feel this was a beneficial experience and has allowed us to develop a greater knowledge base on the work of a senator.

Thank you to Sen. Greg Ball for the opportunity to participate in this event and for inspiring youth to become involved in their government and political practice and procedure.

Banfield is planning to attend Bucknell University in the fall; DosSantos will attend New York University.
