MAMARONECK, N.Y. Like most high school seniors, Sarah Blunt is waiting to hear if she got into the college of her choice, but she is just one of four National Merit Scholarship semi-finalists at Mamaroneck High School.
The Larchmont resident, along with three of her classmates and 16,000 nationwide, is waiting to hear if she will be one of the 8,300 chosen for a scholarship this February based on her grades, work experience and community service.
"I was definitely excited," Blunt said. "I didn't do anything crazy, but I was happy."
In addition to maintaining good grades, she is active in several clubs at the high school, including the Nap Club, for which she is president. "The idea behind it is that teenagers, to function, have to get 11 hours of sleep, but the average gets less than seven," said Blunt, whose club meets once a week to quite literally nap. "Napping can actually increase your functionality and your productive capabilities during the day."
While her role in the Nap Club and Real Food Club at school keep Blunt busy, she spends most of her time as the captain of the cross country team and playing the cello. Most recently, the senior was one of 23 Mamaroneck High School students selected to participate in the Area All-State concert at Purchase College Nov. 3.
Blunt puts her love of the cello to good use in an annual concert, which originated as a seventh-grade bat mitzvah project. "I thought I'd combine the music that I love with doing something good for the community," said Blunt, who holds the concerts at the Larchmont Temple benefiting a charity of her choice.
Blunt's concert has featured 40 performers and artists from the community, and proceeds in the past have gone to the Susan G. Komen For the Cure Foundation, the American Red Cross and The American Heart Association. This year's concert remains tentative due to her schedule.
Blunt applied early action to Yale University, where she is thinking of pursuing the sciences. Two of the other three Mamaroneck National Merit semi-finalists Julia Bindler, and David Cruikshank did not want to be included in this article. The Daily Mamaroneck will also feature Dylan Spangle.
