Lewisboro Bus Crash Students Escape Injury

SOUTH SALEM, N.Y. - Shortly before 8 a.m. on Wednesday, October 19, Lewisboro police received word of an accident on Route 35, near the intersection of Ridgefield Avenue, involving two automobiles and a school bus.

Two cars collided and crossed the center median of Route 35, said Katonah-Lewisboro School Superintendent Kreutzer. The bus driver, in an attempt to avoid an accident, merged to the right but was nevertheless hit by one of the cars. The bus was en route to John Jay Middle School.

South Salem Police Officer Dean Gilhooly reported that both automobile drivers were injured. One was taken to Danbury Hospital, the other to Norwalk Hospital. Because the 43 children on the school bus were not old enough to refuse medical attention, they were all taken to Northern Westchester Hospital.

Hospital spokesperson Mark Vincent said that none of the children was injured and all were released to their parents. The cause of the accident is still under investigation but Officer Gilhooly said that one of the automobile drivers “may have fallen asleep at the wheel.”
