Who Want Careers in Sports

The annual Big Apple Sports Career Camp offers lots of opportunities for students in Fairfield County to learn about the sports industry and get a headstart on playing a position "off the field." The camp runs from July 26-29 in the New York metro area.

Diamond Sports Careers, whose leaders includes New Canaan's David Torromeo, developed the camp. The Fairfield County Sports Commission is offering a discount on registration fees and an opportunity to earn an event scholarship for students who sign up by June 30

"We developed the Big Apple Sports Career Camp to give students an opportunity hear from industry executives and rising stars in a unique setting at world famous sports venues, where they can gain invaluable experience and knowledge about a growing, $400 billion industry,'' said Walter Recher, who founded Diamond Sports Careers with Torromeo. "It's also a great opportunity to develop contacts and relationships for students who want to get into the game."

Sessions will be held at the studios of Major League Baseball, the Meadowlands, NBA headquarters and Yankee Stadium. Scheduled speakers include executives with the New York Giants, the NBA, the MLB Network, sports media personalities and, at Yankee Stadium, Lonn Trost, the Bombers’ chief operating officer.

Presentations will provide industry insights and inside information on getting started on a career in sports (the Diamond Sports "Baseline" presentation) and seminars on internships and jobs in coaching and athletic administration, college financial planning, sports marketing, digital media, communications, sponsorship, agency, entrepreneurship and more.

Students who register can enter the Diamond Sports Perfect Pitch Competition, sponsored by Barnum Financial Group, by submitting an essay of 50 words or less telling why they want to work in sports. Entries will be judged by Diamond Sports, with one winning entry chosen to attend the Big Apple Sports Career Camp through the Perfect Pitch Competition Scholarship. The winner will have access to the entire schedule of events, seminars and tours.
