Crowds Ignore Rain, Flock to Ossining Village Fair

OSSINING, N.Y. – Ossining wasn’t about to let a few rain drops spoil one of the village’s biggest events of the year.

Despite cloudy skies and dreary conditions, hundreds of people flooded Main and Spring streets Saturday, anxious to be a part of Ossining’s 32nd Village Fair.

“This is a very exciting day,” Mayor Bill Hanauer said as he made his way through the crowd, adding the damp weather had helped cool temperatures in the village.

“It’s usually excruciatingly hot,” he said.

For seven hours, the busy intersection off Route 9 was transformed into a sea of color and sound as pop-up tents lined the streets, full of vendors hawking their goods to anyone who would listen.  As visitors made their way through heart of the village, they caught a glimpse of a rock concert, tried their hand at carnival-style games and grabbed a bite to eat at one of the many hot dog and fried food stands.

Long-time resident Anne Carpenter joined a small crowd around the dunk tank, watching as her 6-year-old son Charlie nailed a bull’s eye and sent a village police volunteer into the tub of water.  Carpenter said she has tried to make it to the festival every year.

“I love the town of Ossining,” she said. “This is a great community and I’m behind anything meant to support it.”

Jennifer and Mark Burstein also looked on as their 7-year-old son Dillon sent an officer plunging into the dunk tank water. But it wasn’t the games their children were looking forward to. It was the funnel cake and bouncy castle.

After living in Ossining for nine years, the Bursteins said the fair has become a highlight of their summer.

“We get to walk around the community – it’s just a fun day,” Jennifer Burstein said.
