Featured speakers will be Roger Panetta, Ph.D., from Fordham University and Sean Kelley, from Eastern State Penitentiary. The event will take place at 7 p.m. Feb. 12 at the Ossining Boat and Canoe Club, 1 Westerly Road, Ossining.
The event is the culmination of a visit to Sing Sing by Eastern State Penitentiary staff and consultants, who are bringing their expertise in the development and running of the popular Philadelphia tourist destination to share with the Friends of the Sing Sing Historic Prison Museum. The Thursday night discussion seeks to generate interest from history and economic development fans alike to raise awareness about the significant role Sing Sing Prison played in the history of the Hudson Valley and to encourage support for the Sing Sing Museum Project.
The future Sing Sing Museum hopes to draw local, national and international visitors to the Hudson Valley, an area known at home and abroad for its rich offerings in historic tourism. The museum has the potential to generate significant economic activity as has been demonstrated by the experience of Alcatraz in San Francisco and Eastern State Penitentiary in Philadelphia, and to be a draw for history buffs, film fans and followers of criminal justice reform.
"Learning about the history of these two prisons and how they impacted one another, as well as our overall history, will be fascinating," Galef said. "It is important for us to understand how our present prison system came into existence and the role Sing Sing and Eastern State Penitentiary have played is a vital part of that history."
