HARRISON, N.Y. - Moms, dads, boys and ghouls lined up in West Harrison Friday afternoon for the first of two parades in town celebrating Halloween weekend.
Residents, and even some pets, showed off their costumes and collected candy as they enjoyed activities planned by the Harrison Recreation Department.
Harrison Public Library Director Galina Chernkyh dressed as the Queen of the Library as she marched alongside West Harrison Children's Librarian Liz Karkoff, who was dressed as Pippi Longstocking.
"The parade is a great thing to do for the kids," Chernykh said.
The parade in West Harrison began at 4 p.m. and made its way from the West Harrison Fire Department down Lake Street towards the library, eventually ended in the park near Silver Lake. Magician and ventriloquist John Pizzi greeted the children as they arrived in the park for his own magic show.
Other dignitaries that attended the parade included Harrison Mayor and Supervisor Joan Walsh, Councilman Fred Sciliano, mayoral candidate Ron Belmont, town council candidate Stephen Malfitano, and town clerk candidate Jackie Greer.
"I'm impressed with the costumes and the enthusiam," Walsh said. "Halloween has become a special and big holiday."
Another parade occurred in downtown Harrison at 6 p.m. near Parson's Elementary School on Halstead Avenue, courtesy of the Harrison Recreation Department.
