Local Artist Immortalizes Pets

You’ve probably got tons of photos of your favorite pet, but wouldn’t a framed painting of Fido look nice in that empty spot on your wall?

Georgette Diamandis, a Rowayton resident, is an animal lover and painter who turns photos of your pooch or kitty into a work of art. She grew up in an artistic environment. “My mom was a fashion designer,” says Georgette. “She always had us doing crafts, like sewing buttons on socks.” She started painting at Brian McMahon High School but it wasn’t until she spent a few years in Australia that Georgette began to take painting seriously. “The landscapes were so beautiful that I went out and bought a watercolor kit so I could paint them,” she says. Back home, Georgette enrolled in art classes at the Rowayton Arts Center. One winter when she was stuck at home with bronchitis, she was inspired to try painting her cat, Arrow. These days Georgette paints mostly cats and dogs, “Though I’ve done a horse and a chicken, too!”

You can meet Georgette and talk pets and paintings from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 9 at the William Pitt/Sotheby’s Rowayton office. Her paintings are also on display at the Darien Rowayton Bank in Darien through the end of April.
