OSSINING, N.Y. – Christian Federico, a Yonkers native and star athlete at Ossining High School, where he graduated in 2008, will be honored by friends and family with the fifth annual Christian Federico Memorial Softball Tournament at Redmond Field in Yonkers on Saturday, July 26. The star football and baseball player went on to attend the University of Maryland, where he died while jogging on April 30, 2010.
"Christian was just 20, but he was fortunate to have experienced many positive things in his lifetime," Luanne Federico said of her son at last year's tournament. "He was well-liked and respected by his peers, coaches, teachers and family members, and he truly enjoyed living his life with gusto."
The softball event, which has raised thousands of dollars for a scholarship established in Federico's memory, will be held at Redmond Field on Cook Avenue in Yonkers from 8 a.m.-8 p.m. His father, Lou Federico, who coached his son at Ossining, was a standout athlete at Roosevelt High School in Yonkers from 1967-70 and worked for the city of Yonkers.
The event will feature a tournament, men’s and women’s games, a picnic and raffles that will offer prizes contributed by businesses throughout the county.
The coed and men's brackets were filled early, as the tournament drew teams from all over Westchester County.
A commemorative tree was planted on July 27, 2013 at the Redmond Field site where Christian Federico played baseball for the Yonkers PAL.
The Federico family invites everyone to attend to watch the daylong tournament and participate in the raffles.
Contributions may also be sent to the fund at 2 Butler Place, Ossining, N.Y. 10562.
