A South Norwalk man taunted a Norwalk Police officer he injured in a scuffle Friday afternoon and even tried to grab the officer's pistol away, police reported. The man's uncle encouraged his nephew to ignore police orders, and both were arrested, the police said.
Kimani Williams, 19, and Clarence Williams, 39, both of 10 Leonard St., were charged with breach of peace and interfering with a police officer. Kimani Williams was also charged with assault of a public safety officer, threatening in the second degree and reckless use of a highway by a pedestrian. His bond was $50,000, and his uncle's was $5,000. Police said Kimani Williams has criminal record of firearms and narcotics convictions.
Police said the pair were walking down the middle of South Main Street at about 3:30 p.m. and refused to obey when they were told to use the sidewalk. Kimani Williams became boisterous and irate, swearing at the officers and saying, "I walk where I wanna walk," police said. He was warned he was going to get an infraction for reckless use of a highway by a pedestrian, and police attempted to detain him. Officers said Clarence Williams yelled, "Don't stop! Just keep walking! Don't listen to them!"
Police said parents in the parking lot of St. Joseph's Church turned to look and people came out of a nearby Laundromat to see what was happening. Officers stopped traffic and Kimani Williams clenched his fists, police said. He punched one of the officer's in the shoulder, police said. The officer fell to the sidewalk as he and the other officer tried to subdue Kimani Williams, police said. Williams then reached to the officer's right hip to try and get his gun, according to the officers. The assaulted officer complained of shoulder pain, cuts and abrasions to both elbows.
Once in handcuffs, Kimani Williams laughed about the officer's injuries and swore at the officer. "This is what I does," police quoted him as saying. As they went to the cruiser he threatened to hurt the officer worse next time, police said.
