OSSINING, N.Y. Ossining residents dont need to go far to get the taste of Portugal.
Ossinings Tasty Port Wine which specializes in wine from Portugal, is nearing its first year anniversary. Owner Antonio DaSilva and Manager Rute Goncalves are both Portugal natives who have dedicated the last year of their lives to building the wine shop from scratch in downtown Ossining. The pair is hosting a wine tasting on Oct. 6 and plan to hold a one year celebration around their anniversary on Oct. 22 at the shop at 127 Main St.
Portuguese wine is not very well known and our goal is to have everyone taste something different, Goncalves said Thursday. We want to give people in Ossining who are from Portugal that taste of home and those who are not from Portugal a new taste they havent experienced.
While the flavor is distinctly Portuguese, it was important for DaSilva to incorporate elements of Ossining into the design of the shop. The authenticity carries over into the construction of the shop itself.
All of the wine displays were found in Ossining and all done by hand, Concalves said. The tree trunks and pieces of wood that make up the displays were picked up after Hurricane Irene passed by. The environment is elegant yet rustic and its all Ossining.
Goncalves said she chose to join the wine shop for the hundreds of Portuguese families living in Ossining.
Its always been a passion of mine to support my country and expose the culture here, she said.
The store is young but it is already making an impact on the Ossining community, said Ingrid Richards, the Village of Ossinings downtown and ecomonic development manager.
(Tasty Port Wine) is a great example of the diverse shops that are helping our downtown area grow, Richards said earlier this year. Its a beautiful shop that really shows what we have to offer.
