Sylvie Farrell recently started her own Decorating Den franchise, which specializes in home decorating.

"We go the clients home," Farrell said. "The clients never come to me, I go to them."

Farrell, who recently joined the Yorktown Small Business Association and is targeting clients in Westchester and Putnam, said there is a real value in going to someone's home and seeing what needs to be fixed.

"They don't have to go anywhere," Farrell said. "I can make my presentation in the sanctity and safety of their home."

Being in the Hudson Valley is another boon for Farrell, which she says is one of the most beautiful parts of the country.

"People who tend to call this area home are always vibrant, interesting, and talented people," Farrell said. "I like surrounding myself in a community like that."

Farrell said she has always had a taste for decoration, living in a 1760 pre-Revolutionary War farmhouse in Lake Peekskill while also jazzing up her Manhattan apartment when she was a "swinging Manhattan girl."

"I have always decorated for friends and family," Farrell said. "It's how I always wanted to make a living. I didn't know how to start since I don't have a formal education in design. I didn't have the credentials one might normally associate with decorating."

After discovering Decorating Den, Farrell learned more about the company and decided to buy a franchise. She said the company has helped her with continuing education, marketing, and building relationships.

When it comes to decorating homes, Farrell said the secret is to make sure the home reflects the taste, style and comfort level of the customer.

"I don't live there, they do," Farrell said. "It's a feel-good moment when I can help a client who really wants to love their environment, but doesn't know how to begin selecting their style and colors."

Farrell said she loves when she reveals her work to a client and it ends up being like the ending of a home makeover show.

"When I see how happy the client is, it makes me happy," Farrell said. "It means I did my job. I helped transform someone's life and their surroundings."
