The planning board voted unanimously on Monday to approve the wholesale club's $60 million plans in Yorktown. Located on Route 202 at 3200 Crompond Road (just west of the Mobil station at the intersection of Mohansic Avenue), plans call for a 151,000-square foot building for the members only wholesale club that will also feature a gas station.

The Yorktown Costco will be the store's only location in northern Westchester and Putnam. Costco has locations in New Rochelle, Yonkers and Port Chester.

The location previously served as a hotel and later a homeless shelter.

Costco has been in the planning stages since 2009 and the project has faced opposition from residents concerned about an increase in traffic and the impact the store will have on small businesses.

Supporters said it will help increase the town's tax base. Costco, which plans to make $3 million worth of infrastructure improvements to curb flooding on Route 202, has said it will produce more than $900,000 a year in tax revenue for the school and the town.

Sen. Terrence Murphy, who previously served on the Yorktown Town Board praised the planning board's vote and said Northern Westchester has become more business friendly.

"For years, others told people why they couldn't," Murphy said. "We have shifted the paradigm to tell people how they can. After years of inaction by the 'not in my backyard' crowd, we have elected enough like-minded, pro-business officials that we are primed to welcome businesses into our communities."
